The global artificial intelligence boom is reshaping the physical requirements of digital infrastructure across Southeast Asia. As hyperscalers and enterprises deploy high-performance compute clusters across Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia, traditional data center designs are reaching their technical limits.

At the recent Data Center and Power Southeast Asia Summit (DCPSEA 2026) in Bangkok, Galaxy Data Center’s Vice President of Development, Jack He, joined industry leaders to address a critical question: How can Southeast Asia scale its data center infrastructure to meet unprecedented AI demand while maintaining long-term operational and environmental sustainability?

Here are the key strategic and engineering insights shared during the panel discussion, "Riding the wave of global AI boom to boost Southeast Asia Data Centre development."

1. The Engineering Paradigm: Scale, Speed, and Lifecycle Agility

Legacy data centers were built for cloud computing and general storage, utilising low-density racks (around 8kW) supported by standard air cooling. AI workloads demand massive density jumps, reaching 40kW to over 100kW per rack, making liquid cooling an industry standard.

To support this shift, Jack highlighted three core anchors that define Galaxy Data Center's approach:

·       Scale Upfront: AI models rely on massive parallel processing and experience sharp demand spikes. Rather than adding incremental capacity over time, operators must deploy infrastructure in large, dedicated blocks right from day one.

·       Systematic Speed: Speed to market is not about rushing construction on-site; it is the natural result of an integrated delivery system. Through standardised modular engineering and pre-positioned supply chain inventory, Galaxy DC has compressed its electromechanical delivery cycle to 5 months, achieving total go-live from civil works in just 8 months.

·       Lifecycle Flexibility: Next-generation GPUs evolve rapidly. True sustainability means underwriting an asset for its entire multi-lease lifecycle, not just the first tenant contract. Galaxy DC campuses are engineered so that when new chip generations drop, only about 20 percent of the mechanical and electrical (M&E) systems require an upgrade, leaving the core structural backbone intact.

2. Sequencing Risk Across the Infrastructure Lifecycle

A central theme of the panel was navigating regional bottlenecks, including grid capacity, supply chain constraints, regulatory approvals, and talent shortages.

Jack introduced a structured framework for managing these variables, emphasising that risks do not hit all at once; they emerge sequentially across three distinct stages of development.

Stage 1: Site Selection & Planning

·       Primary Ceiling: Power availability and grid access.

·       Action: Without clear substation upgrade timelines, a site is not investable. Galaxy DC engages local utility providers like EGAT and provincial authorities from day one to co-plan grid reinforcement and secure upfront capacity commitments.

Stage 2: Construction & Delivery

·       Primary Ceiling: Supply chain resilience and regulatory compliance.

·       Action: To insulate projects from global delays, operators must maintain multi-sourced equipment vendor agreements and pre-positioned inventory. At this stage, meeting strict ESG requirements, green building standards, and carbon controls is non-negotiable for international clients and institutional financiers.

Stage 3: Operations & Long-Term Stability

·       Primary Ceiling: Specialised technical talent.

·       Action: Operating liquid-cooled, high-density campuses requires advanced skill sets beyond traditional facilities management. Galaxy DC actively partners with local Thai universities and vocational institutes to build customised training programs and internship pipelines, establishing local expertise well before facility go-live dates.

3. Positioned for Growth: Making Thailand an ASEAN AI Hub

With Southeast Asia's data center market crossing the $10 billion threshold and attracting over $50 billion in planned investment, Thailand sits at a pivotal juncture.

To capitalise on this wave, Jack outlined a three-part vision for the local ecosystem:

1.     Grid Modernisation: Accelerating utility upgrades, expanding on-site renewable energy integration, and establishing dedicated feeder lines to minimize delivery lead times.

2.     Streamlined Governance: Establishing single-point digital fast-tracks for zoning, environmental, and construction permits to allow parallel regulatory processing.

3.     Ecosystem Collaboration: Fostering tight alignment between government agencies, power utilities, academic institutions, and private operators to build an integrated supply chain and talent network.

4. Looking Ahead: Multi-Gigawatt Regional Execution

As Southeast Asia transitions from an emerging market to a core pillar of the global AI map, Galaxy Data Center remains committed to expanding its footprint across key regional hubs.
